College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences

Welcome parents and guests. A warm welcome to you and your student from the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences! The following information contains important tips to help you help your student prepare for Registration.

Completing the Online Tutorial and Homework

Within the student area of IStart, a "New Student Checklist" is provided for your student to track their IStart action items. These action items include tasks that are completed online, such as confirming their Registration appointment, ordering lunch, viewing a registration tutorial, and completing college homework.

Later this spring, your student will need to complete the online tutorial and homework on IStart. Important Note: ALL students must have this tutorial completed a minimum of two weeks prior to arrival on campus for Registration. There are three main components of the online tutorial and homework:

  1. Learning. Within the tutorial, students will learn more about the College, the registration system, and course requirements.
  2. Telling us about themselves. Students will be asked to input information about any test-based and community college credits, to identify courses of interest, and to generate ideas for possible fall class schedules.
  3. Placement tests. All students admitted to the College of ACES must complete the chemistry placement test unless they have successfully completed two years of chemistry in high school. If a student plans on studying a language at the U of I, they must take a Language Placement Test, regardless of how many years they studied the language in high school. The student has fulfilled their U of I College of ACES language requirement if they have successfully completed the third level of one language, other than English, in high school. Math and Rhetoric placement is based on the student's ACT scores for Math and English; a placement test is not needed.

All three pieces of this information will be made available to the College staff who will be assisting your student during Registration. It is helpful if your student can also print and bring a copy of the information she or he will be submitting through IStart. All this information is vital to helping your student register for appropriate classes, so please encourage your student to complete the tutorial and placement exams early!

Planning for the Registration Date

Remember to bring a copy of your student's IStart Homework, a couple pens/pencils, and some paper to take notes throughout the day. Upon arrival, you and your student will check in and attend a short University Welcome presentation. Next, you will both attend a College Welcome session together, and then you will have the opportunity to attend some parent sessions while your student attends a departmental meeting. You will meet up for lunch, then part again. Your student will proceed to the College of ACES advising and registration session held in the computer labs in the basement of the ACES Library, Information, and Alumni Center. You will be able to attend more information sessions covering important topics such as financial aid, housing, health services, and campus safety. You can also take tours of the Quad. Once your student has successfully registered for their fall coursework and checked out of our advising and registration session, you are both free to finish any errands you may want to complete while here on campus.

You and your student will be receiving lots of valuable information during your visit to campus for Registration, so come ready to learn! In the meantime, please visit our website, www.aces.uiuc.edu, for more information.
