College of Fine and Applied Arts

Dear Fine and Applied Arts Parents:

Welcome to the world of the arts at Illinois. We hope you are excited about joining us and we offer congratulations on your son or daughter's acceptance into the College of Fine and Applied Arts. The next few months will be an exciting time for you and your student. We would like to take this opportunity to share some insight about what will transpire in preparation for your student's arrival on campus.

The First Step

Your student's next step will be to complete the on-line tutorial later this spring through the IStart website. This tutorial will help prepare your student for on campus registration in June! While completing this tutorial, students will have the opportunity to identify courses of interest, provide information about AP and community college coursework, and to learn more about their prospective schedules for Fall. All students must have this tutorial completed 2 weeks prior to arrival on campus for Registration.

All students must take the language placement exam regardless of whether they intend to take a foreign language course at the University. The placement score is advisery only and does not become a part of their permanent record.

If students complete the exams in a timely manner advisers will receive copies of their placement scores prior to registration. Please encourage your student to complete the tutorial and placement exams early!

What Can I Expect from Registration?

Your student's visit to campus this summer will be full of information. You and your student will start and end the day together as well as have lunch together. However much of the day will be spent in separate meetings. This allows us to better address the specific concerns of each group. Parents and students will jointly meet with the College for about an hour. Students will then leave for meetings with their advisors while parents can continue to meet with the College or attend other meetings of personal interest.

Your student will have an opportunity to meet with their adviser in the morning and again in the afternoon when they actually register for classes. During this time, numerous campus resources and programs will be available for parents. This is a great time to familiarize yourself with the campus and to learn more about the University of Illinois. Once registration is complete you will meet with your son or daughter for a recap of the day!

Again, welcome—we look forward to meeting you in the very near future. In the meantime, please visit the College of Fine and Applied Arts website at www.faa.uiuc.edu for more information.
