Freshman Housing Options
We recognize the importance of a smooth transition to the University of Illinois, therefore, all freshmen students are required to live in University Housing, Private Certified Housing, or in a fraternity or sorority.
University Housing
University Housing residence halls provide one of the most important learning and social environments you will experience while attending Illinois. Our goal is to make our halls academically challenging and supportive environments, and more than 8,700 undergraduates choose to live in University residence halls. You can select from a number of lifestyle, architectural, and geographical options across the 1,300-acre campus. Seven Living Learning Communities offer programs focusing on international relations; multiculturalism in the United States; health professions; women in math, science, and engineering; career exploration; leadership; and liberal arts. The University Housing meal plan is the only plan that lets students dine in any hall on campus, so there's always a fresh, nutritious, fun dining option nearby. We look forward to welcoming you into this special campus community. Your Illinois experience starts here – come make yourself at home.

Private Certified Housing
Private Certified Housing (PCH) facilities are certified by the University of Illinois as part of the University's housing program. These facilities offer an array of comfortable and attractive living accommodations in a wide range of locations, prices and sizes. PCH units are often known for the amenities provided such as: larger square footage, air-conditioning, semi-private bathrooms and their great location on campus to name a few. Private Certified Housing provides a safe and educational atmosphere with residence life staffs who are available to assist students and provide programs. Within any give year, more than 20% of the entering freshman class chooses to live in one of these facilities. While each facility complies with the University's standards in regard to space, furnishings, lighting and telecommunications, they are also privately owned and operated so you can be guaranteed a location and space that is right for you!

Sororities and Fraternities
The University is home to one of the nation's largest sorority and fraternity communities. Membership in sororities and fraternities is by invitation, extended after recruitment/intake period. Some of the sororities and fraternities have houses for their members. Sorority and fraternity houses, located near campus, provide housing for more than 2,400 women and men. Room and board costs for sororities and fraternities are set by the individual organizations and are not tied to the cost of the University residence halls.
